Chronology
A group of friends gather for a pre-wedding party that descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious game that awakens long-hidden secrets, desires and resentments. I really wanted to like this
It started well enough; I even liked the mechanic they used (which I won’t spoil here). As someone else said, it looked like it was going to get pretty interesting pretty quickly. Instead, it got really bad pretty quickly. The thing is, these friends meet at this house for a fun night, okay, but we don’t really know them.
But everyone else?
And without knowing them at all, we’re really just not invested in what ends up happening. Of course, one of the couples is introduced early on, just through a very specific lens. We are given hints, not much more. They are drawn quite flat and broad and we as an audience don’t care enough about it beyond the surface level.
I gave 35 minutes
I think what the movie is trying to do here is really asking us to be invested. It’s like we’ve agreed to go on a roller coaster ride with them, but before we can even say hello and exchange pleasantries, we’re strapped in and whisked away for the next couple of hours. And the ride is not as fun as it seems. I’m a pretty avid watcher of all kinds of horror (I even thought Bodies Bodies Bodies was fun) – but this one just didn’t do it for me.
